Brian Keenan eventually was put in the same cell as the hostage John McCarthy. They were moved around Beirut from time to time, in the dark and kept hidden.
I read last night how they were marched from their cell into the dark street. They were gagged, blindfolded and arms taped to their sides. They were then put in a metal box that was in the base of a truck. When the truck started up, the diesel fumes poured into the box. When the truck hit (many) rocks, their heads hit the box and there was blood.
'Panic was seizing me by the throat. I felt the pressure of it and I raged and raged and tried to remember those convoluted chapters of the Book of Revelation.... I found enough violence of expression to condemn these men. Exhausted from my ranting I would try to recall that hymn of William Blake:
I will not cease from Mental Fight
Not shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant Land'
How, jusr how? Reading this makes me think of how humans have that inherent drive in them when their lives are threatened. That drive is survival. I will survive if I possibly can.
