This was O'Donovan's first oil painting. She was working in the lab for her PhD and felt that her life was very black and white. She either got positive results or negative results and she longed for some greys in her life! So she began painting her hands at night with a starter kit of oil paints and this began her passion for the sculptural and three dimensional aspect of oils.
