I wanted to paint my mother's hands as I've known them throughout my life. As I was painting, I concentrated on the flesh, showing skin with muscle, tendon, bones and joints beneath. But it somehow didn't feel right. Last thing I painted Mum's engagement and wedding ring and suddenly the canvas worked. It made me realise how important they were in the image of my mother's hands!
