An Evil Cradling

My mum and I have a bit of a disagreement. She says that life can be so hard at times that when she reads, she'd rather it be something happy and positive. Everyone who knows me though, knows I read about reality. And the tough side of it, murders, crime and so on.

Last night is an example. On the morning of 11th April 1986 Brian Keenan was taken hostage at gunpoint and locked on his own in an underground cell 6ft by 4ft. In the morning each day he was allowed to use the toilet. Back in his cell he had his daily food - piece of Arabic bread, an egg, maybe some meat. That's it. No more contact til the next morning.

He was sure he'd be released in about 2 weeks, 14 days. He was released 1, 722 days later 24th August 1990.

This book describes his time in that cell. What he thought, how he dealt with his fear, his beatings, his torture. Now then, how do I put this. My life has had its twists and turns. But reading this in bed last night, I stopped reading and tried to imagine what this was like. Is it terrible to have taken some positivity from what he wrote?
