Win a car? Yeah, right

We were driving somewhere at the weekend and were following a Fiat 500 car. It brought back to me a memory I’m not particularly proud of.

When we got back from Australia into the flat, we’d rented out while we were gone, Paul landed himself a job and was working full time. I was sleeping and watching tv in a bit of a haze. I got into a routine of watching the same tv programmes each day – it was almost as though I needed the routine to get by.

I used to get up in time to watch Loose Women. I will freely admit right now that it’s pretty rubbish. But it’s almost as though it got into my mantra and was watched each day.

The thing is, they often did those phone-in competitions. The kinds that when they come on telly now, I outwardly say something like “aye right, I’ll phone in and you’ll charge me a tenner then will you?!” and move on.

But not back then. I used to completely convince myself that if I phoned in enough times then I’d win. I would. I’d win that car. So I phoned in. Again and again and again…and unsurprisingly I didn’t win, though of course our telephone bill rocketed.

So, we were in the car at the weekend and I told Paul about my memory. He listened and made a brief comment. “Those were the days eh?!”
